Going ... Going ... GONE!

Disappearing Dover (2) - Hotels

This was Webb's Hotel in Folkestone Road in early 2006, with demolition just getting started.

My sister had her wedding reception here in 1959.  A small, family-run hotel for many years, with attractive gardens to the rear, Webb's was taken over in the 1970s and became part of the Granham Group.

Attempts to revive business by converting the function rooms into a modern pub, called Captain Webb's after the first man to swim the channel both ways, failed to make it pay, so it became yet another casualty.

Once cleared it was surprising how large the site was.  This view looking from Folkestone Road shows the houses of Clarendon Street in the background.

In September 2006 work is nearing completion on an estate of 33 retirement apartments.  These are built using the modern pre-fabricated timber construction with a single outer skin of brick.
