Old Dover

The view above was drawn in October 1772, looking east from the old harbour.

This etching dates from around the time of the Napoleonic wars and purports to show the view looking east from near Archcliffe Fort.  It seems likely that it was drawn by someone who was either working from memory (not very clear!) or who had not actually seen this view.  The castle is not right, the cliffs slope too gently to the sea, and there are hills where the centre of the town should be!

This view of the town and castle from the Priory Farm dates from around 1800.
