Going ... Going ... GONE!

Disappearing Dover (5) - Streets

The picture above shows the area where once stood "The Cause is Altered" on the corner of Cowgate Hill and Princes Street.  This row of shops and cottages are threatened with demolition to make way for an extension to the old folks' home round the corner in Adrian Street.
The architects have decided that it would cost too much to put them back into habitable condition; does this mean that these other cottages at the top of the hill by the cemetery are living on borrowed time?

This rather sad looking building around the corner in Princes Street was originally called Prospect House and was built in 1800 as a school for "young gentlemen" by a Freeman of Dover, Mr. John Hartley.  In 1908 it was purchased by Mrs. Beresford Baker, who ran it as The Day Star Mission until 1938.

It was probably used for military purposes during the war years, but in 1953 it became the Prince of Wales Sea Training School, which remained until 1975, when escalating costs led to it's closure.

For the next 20 years it was used by Dover College as dormitory accommodation for it's female pupils.  In 1996 it was purchased by the YMCA as a shelter and training centre, but it was sold again to a developer in December 2004.  Planning consent was obtained to part convert and part demolish the site to provide 35 flats.

Since that time little has been done except to make the building secure.  Local opinion is that the developers are waiting until the building becomes dangerous through neglect and has to be demolished.  Along with the adjoining cottages in Cowgate hill (above) it would make a very profitable development site.
